Indians look at Lee, Kotchman, Pena for 1B

Posted on: December 21, 2011 5:16 pm

The Indians are still scouring the market for a first baseman or outfielder and could be a landing spot for one of three veteran first baseman, Derrek Lee, Casey Kotchman or Carlos Pena.

Little has been heard to this point about Lee, a well-regarded player who was hampered by injuries each of the last two years, but the Indians fit. The Pirates were interested earlier in Lee are said now to be a long shot for him. The Rays, Cubs and possibly Cardinals are other teams eyeing the first base market, which also includes Prince Fielder.

Indians people have characterized their first base/outfield search as including "everyone but Prince,'' who's a bit pricier than the others.

The Indians are also looking at several outfielders on the market. Most of the more productive outfielders have gone elsewhere already, but among those still remaining are Cody Ross, Ryan Ludwick and Xavier Nady.

Indians look at Lee, Kotchman, Pena for 1B

Based on the Cleveland Plain Dealer, initial interest Indians showed in Lee was not returned and most indications were that he had no interest in coming to Cleveland.  Locally they've said Kotchman had some interest last year, but given he's a left handed bat and they are desperate for a right hander, it maybe a long shot.

The Indians should take a flyer on Pena at around 4-5M.  I was pissed when he left Boston after only playing a hand full of games.  He went to Tampa and was very productive.  Lots of Homers and RBI's.  If they can't Pena they may want to take a chance at Lee who should only get 2 - 2.5 million for one year.  If the Indians are serious they'll sign one of them to see if they'll flourish on a one year deal.  If they don't have have a shot at the playoffs they could make a deadline trade or hold onto one of them and get the prospects when another tean signs them.  Smart move - sign one of them and way your options at mid season or at the end of 2012.

Ugh...typical Indians sifting through the discard & reject pile.  So one time Brewer ueber prospect and trade chip for CC Matt LaPorka clearly is done or bench fodder.  Derek Lee is washed up, which is painfully obvious when the Lowly O`s & Pirates give up on him. Krotchman is no good and Pena a decent but one year $9,000,000 or so is alot for a position you have to fix. They`d be better off putting injury prone Grady Sizemore at 1B than sign any of those stiffs.  As for the OF trash bin(Ross, Ludwick, Nady) at least JD Drew isn`t on that list.  Keep stinkin Indians!
