Nationals pushing for Gio Gonzalez

Posted on: December 21, 2011 5:42 pm

The Nationals are pushing hard for Gio Gonzalez, the most popular trade target among starting pitchers. The Red Sox, Nationals, Tigers, Blue Jays, Marlins and Yankees also are believed to be in the mix to varying degrees, while several more ave checked in.

The Nationals are believed willing to include multiple top prospects, basically almost anybody short of Stephen Strasburg or Bryce Harper. That could mean Brad Peacock, Derek Norris, Destin Hood, Eury Perez and A.J. Cole. Peacock and Norris are probably their third- and fourth-best prospects. Hood and Perez are outfielders, Oakland's biggest need.

It's possible Washington could be enticed to include young shortstop Ian Desmond, although that is uncertain.

Washington has been determined to land a left-hander. It missed out on Mark Buehrle earlier.

Desmond needs a new start? You do realize he just completed his second season. He had a rough beginning to his season, but he finished nicely. He made tremendous strides in the field and at the end of the year picked it up with the bat. He truly benefitted from Davey Johnson. The Nats would be fools to deal him now. If the A's want a shortstop let the Nats give up Lombardozzi. The Nats shouldnt give up any of their young players already in place, whether it be Espinosa, Desmond, Clippard or Storen.

Gio pitched great for stretches of the season then was awful.  He is certainly a solid number two behind Strasburg if they get him.  The Nats are putting something together, if they get Gio to go along with Strasburg, Lannan, and Zimmerman that would be a solid 4.  They have a very good setup man and a great young closer.  The lineup still is a work in progress, but that can be pieced together.  If Gio ends up a National and has the kind of year hes capable of, the Nationals should be wild card contender.  As a Mets fan is "nice" to watch teams like Washington and Florida sail by the broken down, out of money, Mets.  Good for the former have nots, like the Fish and the Nats, they paid there dues and now seem to be on the verge of being relevant.

Didnt know Gio was spanish for Cy, there treating this kid like he's the messiah, with a wicked left arm.  rather have Edwin Jackson and not have to give up the farm system to get him.

I so hope the pakcage includes Desmond.  He needs a new start and I really want Espinosa at his true position of SS.
