Word is, things are heating up in talks between the Cardinals and star free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran.

The Indians are in play, as well, but St. Louis appears to be more likely. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post_Dispatch said Thursday morning the Cardinals may be the leading team.

St. Louis is seeking an offensive boost after losing megastar Albert Pujols, and they view Beltran as the best, most cost-efficient option available. They have said they won't play for Prince Fielder.

Five teams were identified as in the mix for Beltra by Scott Miller of CBSSports.com: the Blue Jays, Indians, Red Sox and Rays. However, Boston seems more focused on pitching, ad the level of interest of the other three teams is less certain. The Indians are probably more likely to wind up with a first baseman to fill their needs, one of Carlos Pena, Casey Kotchman or Derrek Lee.

The Cardinals could move Lance Berkman to first base if they sign Beltran, so he'd work for St. Louis.

The Cardinals are believed to have made atwo-year offer for at least $8 million a year at one point, but Beltra was believed looking for three years.

For the Jays to make this signing, it would only make sense if they have a trade planned for one of their outfielders, because there simply is no room at this point. I think it would make a ton of sense for the Jays to package some young pitching and one or two of Adam Lind, Edwin Encarnacion, Eric Thames, and Travis Snider to acquire a top tier starter, but the herd is thinning quickly with Danks and Gonzalez now both off the board.

I'd bet on the Cards ending up with Beltran, as they need the offensive boost the most. The Cards weren't just about Albert, but I don't think they will even be competitive without his presence. He was Mr. Cardinal for so long, and carried them through so much stuff, I just can't see them competing all that realistically without him there, Beltran or not.

All the NL Central teams are strong teams..now with Pujols on the West Coast whichever team reels Fielder in is going to be the team to beat.  Beltran I dont think will make much of an impact as most people think he will, including myself.

Blue Jays will make a limp attempt to acquire him because they will do anything cheaper than what they SHOULD do (go for Fielder), but he won't want to go to a mediocre team that doesn't care about winning.

I think St. Louis will sign Beltran and with their Pitching make them the team to beat, The Reds and Brewers will be fighting for second and third place.
