Nats great drafts helped them land Gio

The Nationals' tremendous drafting over the past few years helped them land Gio Gonzalez from the A's.

They became the favorite for Gonzalez immediately after entering the picture through their teremndous prospct list, which was compiled vis super recent drafts.

Once Gonzalez passes the physical, the A's will get pitchers Brad Peaccock, A.J. Cole and Tommy Milone and catcher Derek Norris for Gonzalez. Peacock has a power fastball, a good curveball and improving changeup and is on the cusp of being a full-fledged major leaguer. Cole has the best arm of the bunch. Milone has great stats but was described by one competing GM as "ordinary.''

Norris is a big-time RBI guy who has struggled some the last couple years but is seen for having huge offensive potential.

These are four of the Nationals' top 10 prospects. But of course, none of them is Stephen Strasburg or Bryce Harper.

Meanwhile, they improved their rotation to the point where they may be a cotender. Good for them.

Nats great drafts helped them land Gio

I agree that Gio does have the propensity to lose his control, but his stuff is undeniable.  He has one of the best curveballs in the game.  It does look like quite a bit to give up prospect wise at first glance.  However, when you look a little deeper at it - Derek Norris had no spot on the team with Wilson Ramos and Jesus Flores entrenched as good young catchers, Peacock had a great year last year and looks ready to go as a #3 or #4 guy in the rotation maybe this year or next and Cole at this point has great potential BUT as we all know how many great pitching prospects really become great MLB pitchers?  Not that many, the past is littered with 1st, 2nd and 3rd round busts.  To gamble on giving up Derek Norris, Peacock, Milone (who is an average reliever) and Cole (being great talent but unknown whether he will actually become the real deal) and get a talented young #2/3 starter who is under team control for at least the next few seasons puts them in a great position to contend this season rather than being 2 or 3 years away.  Plus Gonzalez will be an important piece once Strasburg reaches his innings limit this season.  A late season rotation of Jordan Zimmerman, Gio Gonzalez, Wang, Lannan and Detwiler is a lot better than having to rely on an untested rookie or someone off the waiver wire scrap heap.

Nats great drafts helped them land Gio

While the Nats have a deep farm system, they gave up some quality talent here. Gio is a good #3 who at times can lose it al la Oliver Perez.......While this may bode well short term for the Nats, be interesting to see how these prospects play out.
