Yankees choice could be Garza vs. E-Jax

The Yankees desperately seek a No. 2 starter, and fortunately for them, there are still many viable alternatives available on the trade and free agent markets.

But ultimately, the choice could come down to Matt Garza or Edwin Jackson.

The Yankees' like Hiroki Kuroda, but there is no certainty he wants to pitch in New York. They do not appear to be in on the Jair Jurrjens trade discussions, nor even the Wandy Rodriguez or Gavin Floyd talks. And they haven't seemed anxious to go for Roy Oswalt.

That could leave Garza vs. E-Jax.

They like both pitchers. But so far the Yankees don't like the cost for Garza in terms of prospects, and they don't love the price tag for Jackson, either. The Cubs surely would like some combination of Jesus Montero, Manuel Banuelos and Dellin Betances for Garza. Jackson's asking price is said by sources to be about $60 million for five years.

The Yankees so far would like to keep new contracts to one or two years, as they are hopeful of getting below the $189-million luxury tax treshhold in 2014. If they stuck to that, that would make signing Jackson very difficult.

The Yankees like Jackson's arm, his potential and his durability. But they wonder about his consistency. He is one of only three active pitchers 27 or younger with more than 30 games started each of the past five years, the other two being Matt Cain and Felix Hernandez. He is also one of only three age 27 or younger to have thrown 950 innings with no D.L. time the last five years. The others? Cain and Tim Lincecum.

I wonder what Texas would want for Matt Harrison? He's young and pretty good. I heard he might be available... I'd be willing to give up Romine for him and if push came to shove, maybe even Betances (straight up).

They need to eat say 20mil of AJ's contract and send him on his way.

The price for either Jackson or Garza is too much. Too bad, because I think with the Yankee offense, Garza could elevate to a #2. His stats last year were surprisingly similar to Sabathia's. I would certainly be willing to give up Betances for him, but not Montero or Banueles...

Sorry, but this sense of urgency for the Yankees needing a number 2 starter is a load of crap. For anyone that watched the 2011 ALDS, pitching was not the problem.

Would another starter be nice? Of course, any staff could use an upgrade. But is it a necessity? This team won the AL East last season pretty comfortably and with timely hitting, not more pitching, would've been in the ALCS for a second straight season.

I`m sure dealing with Theo for Garza would be damn near impossible and cost Montero + a couple top pitching prospects. For Garza it`s not worth it. I`d pass on EJax too as he`d give up a ton of HR`s in the AL East. Just patch the rotation with duct tape for now and plan on going after King Felix in time.

And how many teams were in the fantasy leagues ? 10 maybe ? So being 10 only the top 20 are # 2 pitchers . Hence maybe most of the top two teams # 2 pitchers would be in about the top 50 .

Jackson's birthdate is listed as 9-9-83, which means he is 28 for the 2012 season, so you're both wrong.

Of the names mentioned, I'd make an offer to Houston for Wandy Rod.  He's a lefty, not bad to have at Yankee Stadium, is a K pitcher, and pretty effective on a bad team.  Get Him!

Jackson is 29. where did they get 27? as a cardinals fan we were glad to have him and if we could trade lohse or westbrook we might sign him for 4/50 but we got no room at the inn.

Easy Dew Drop Boy!  Don't hate, plus don't accuse us Yankee fans and management of the things you do in your own time!

Come on Man!

Can't wait to see how the FA acquisitions pan out!  Should be fun to watch.
