Red Sox invite Varitek to camp; he's weighing it

Respected longtime Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek has been invited by the team to come to camp as a non-roster player with only an outside chance to make the team, and Varitek seems likely to decide between accepting that invitation or retiring, people familiar with his situation said. Mostly out of respect for the iconic Varitek, they let him know the door is open, and they are giving him time to decide. Varitek, 39, who's played his entire big-league career in Boston starting with one at-bat in 1997 and helped them win two World Series, does not appear to be considering looking for a job elsewhere.

The Red Sox fairly have made clear to him that if he did come to camp, he'd serve mostly as "protection'' in the event one of their two catchers, Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Kelly Shoppach, is hurt. Ryan Lavarnway is seen as Boston's catcher of the future but is expected to start the year in Triple-A Pawtucket.

This is probably a tough call for Varitek, a great Red Sox who didn't have a bad year last year when he hit .221 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs. Interestingly, the team was 42-22 in games started by Varitek, and 48-50 in games started by their other catchers, predominantly Saltalamacchia. The staff ERA was 3.57 with Varitek, and 4.62 with Saltlamacchia. But Varitek's throwing isn't what it was, and the Red Sox chose to sign Shoppach.

The respect for Varitek is such that Red Sox people would love him to work for the team in a non-playing capacity once his career is over. He just isn't sure it is just yet.

Thanks for the service Tek, but it's time to hang them up.  You have a hot new wife, a potential coaching job in the organization, and could even manage when the brass gets tired of Valentine in 2-3 years.

"42-22 in games started by Varitek, and 48-50 in games started by their other catchers" is a pretty telling statistic. Perhaps if Varitek had started against Baltimore ini the final game of the season instead of Lavarnway, the Red Sox would have won the Wild Card and played in the postseason.

The Redsox invited varitek to camp because he was and still is their captain.  Most of my Masshole friends agree that The Sox will let him retire on opening day as their captain and as a classy act.  The Sox have Salty, signed Shoppach and have Lavarnway (who's working his butt off this winter) in the mix!  That Gaam whack job is just a bitter old yankees fan.  If A rod any balls he would have fought Varitek but the truth is that Tek would crush him.  Everyone knows it!  Well, congrats to The Sox for doing the right thing with their Captain and Thank You Jason for all the memories and for catching all of those no hitters!

Gaam, you are one nasty, negative mother fu****! I am really glad that I don't know you.  Have 30 or 40 more cans of beer.  It'll improve your personality by putting you into a coma!

Can't wait for this TURD to hang up his cleats.  He's got a chicken arm and can't throw anyone out not to mention he can't hit or run.  He's washed up.  He should have been put out to pasture years ago.  The one thing I regret that ARod never did was in July 2004 in that huge Saturday matinee at Fenway was crack the bat over Tek's head the way Juan Marichal did it to Johnny Roseboro in 1963.  Tek needed an asskicking but ARod was too feminine to give it to him.  I do hope Tek goes to Red Sox camp and disgraces himself.  He'll be just another washed up ballplayer with bad knees.

I'm a Yankee fan, but I love this guy.  Reminded me in some ways of Thurman Munson.

There had better be a coaching job in Boston in his future, at the very least.

This is like the movie Carey.  He gets an invite and then gets humiliated by being cut.  I am in no way a Red Sox person but Tek is a great ball player and by all accounts a great human.  Please just ride off in the sunset as a player then go back to coach.
