Prince starts new team tour; Texas is first stop

Top free agent slugger Prince Fielder has embarked on a second tour of teams today, and is expected to meet with multiple teams, perhaps four or more, on this excursion as he narrows his expansive field of free-agent options.

Fielder is in Texas today meeting with the Rangers, as @BNightengale reported. But that shouldn't be seen as prove they are about to sign Fielder. The Rangers are expecting to spend $100 million or so on Japanese pitching import Yu Darvish, and there have been mixed signals as to whether they might be able to sign both Darvish and Fielder.

The Orioles, Nationals, Mariners, Marlins and incumbent Brewers ave been seen as the other main players, but there may be more. The Cubs and Blue Jays are among others to have shown interest.

The other teams on the tour aren't known as of yet.

So if he's going for pure money, the Orioles and Nats have a chance and possibly the Cubs.  I doubt all three because he needs the rings, this won't be his last trip into free agency and the next time around he better have a ring or two.  His best bets are the Brewers and the Jays.  The Rangers make look like a good match, but I still think that Aug and Sep heat is going to wipe him out and he'll be dead for any playoff contension, plus with Darvish there already the Rangers really want to resign Hamilton and this is his option year and they won't get all three of them.  With the Jays he ahs Bautista either in front or behind him and the two of them would put the fear of god into everyone and may put the Jays into the playoffs now that speculation is the Sox may be down for a few years to revamp.  The Brewers are his best fit, already there, the money is close, Braun is out for at least a third of the season and with him they are a lock for the playoffs, nowhere else can you say that.  So if it's for the ring, the Brewers will win, if it's for the bucks multiple teams could play into it.  Let the greed roll Prince.

"IMO The cubs are the slight favorites here."

Why would the cubs be interested after trading for one of the Padres top prospect, who happens to play 1B? Haven't you been online in awhile?

Unless he finds a sucker GM, doras the boras will be begging for a place for Prince to play by the end of this tour. The smart move would have been taking the Crew's offer of 5yr/100 and then looking to go to yankees/boston at the end of the deal. But dora's ego got in the way. Prince should follow Albert's suit and drop dora like a three dollar bill.

IMO teams are afraid of putting up the big money for this HUGE prospect (yes pun intended.)  His contract probably needs to include a full time Dietician/Nutritionist.  Fielder's probably just a few pounds away from a decrease in bat speed and a decrease in overall agility.  Over the course of three or four years you could be paying dearly for a future Weight Watchers Spokesman instead of a stud banger.

There are different issues with each team listed.

Rangers-It's hard to believe they would be willing to sign Darvish AND Fielder.  Their main need is at the pitching position.  If they sign Darvish spending will be finished.

Orioles-Even if they do sign Prince, THEY WILL STILL FINISH 5TH!!!!  That team also needs pitching.  That pitching staff if probably the worst in the AL if not the entire MLB.  Why would Prince want to go there?

Nationals-They just payed Jayson Werth a boatload of cash.  Signing Prince may cripple them.  I can't see it happenening

Mariners-Let's be real, This team needs A LOT of help offensively.  but it is a pitchers park.  Tough to hit HRs.  Even if they had the money I'm not sure Prince would be willing to go.

Marlins-Have already spent a ton but are still looking to make a splash.  I guess they have tons of cash or at least pretend to have a ton of cash.  I'm just concerned about those owners getting a return on thewir investment with what they have. Addding Prince may not be wise if they wish to have any shot at turning a profit.

Brew Crew-Pick one Prince or Braun...Can't have both.  Too Poor

Cubs- I like the Cubs chances.  Hitters park, Cash to spend, 1st base open.  I think this would be a good fit.

Blue Jays- Probably also a good fit.  Some hurdles though.  The pros Daddy was drafted by the Jays.  Rogers Centre is a hitters park.  Owners are richest in baseball.  Jays have openly admitted they have money they are willing to spend.  Adam Lind can play left field which is currently empty.  Cons-They play in Canada, Toronto is not a fan of signing a free agent to more than 5 yrs.  Toronto would rather trade than pay,

IMO The cubs are the slight favorites here.

If Texas is one team, one has to think that Washington and Seattle are likely included in the minimum of 4. The Cubs are out with their acquisition of Anthony Rizzo nearly cementing it, and I just don't see Miami being able to realistically make this move after the money they've spent already this offseason. Milwaukee? Not sure a meeting would be required, but I supposed you never know. I don't see Prince wanting to go to Baltimore, and I doubt Toronto meets the contract demands. Could be interesting to see what kind of contract he ultimately settles for, and nothing against the player, but I'll enjoy laughing at Boras if the deal is 5 years or less.

Purely for the reason that I'm a baseball fanatic, I google "Prince Fielder" every day to see if he's made a decision. I'm blown away that he and Boras have dragged this out so long, but perhaps the Angels really were the only team willing to put out that kind of contract.

The Rangers don't need another hitter, they need pitching. The offense was one of the best in baseball and should be again this year. If the sign Darvish and Fielder, you can say goodbye to Josh Hamilton at the end of the season. First base was a weak spot last year, but Fielder isn't anywhere near the best defensive first baseman in the league. Is Fielders bat that much better than Hamiltons, and which one plays better defense. Also if the Rangers were to sign Fielder, and Darvish doesn't live up to the hype, they might not be able to get any free agent pitchers in the future. I think it would be a bad move to sign Fielder and Darvish, and pitching is the biggest need.

what's with all the Cubs talk?  Didn't anybody notice they traded for a big time 1b prospect?  Rizzo is the Cubs 1b.

Fielder will end up in Washington, Texas, Milwaukee, Baltimore or Miami.  He's going to get Howard + money, 6 years @ $145m (in which case it might be back to Milwaukee) or 7 years @ $165m.

Seattle has money to spend, a really low payroll, and some money that came off the books this past season.

Don't laugh, he could end up there.

I would take this tour as teams that make the final cut or actually have the funds to pay.  For the Rangers I don't think its either Darvish or Fielder because they have very rich ownership which is often forgotten or maybe not known and I am not talking about Nolan.  They have two billionaires that sit in the wings and just last year they were attempting to get Lee and Beltre.  I as a Ranger fan hope they get Darvish but wait to see what happens with Votto if he hits the market in a few years or could trade for him.
